Network Beyond Bias: The Book

Network Beyond Bias

Making Diversity a Competitive Advantage for Your Career

Is your professional network as diverse as the workforce and community around you? If not, you could be missing important opportunities for your career. We all face challenges in making meaningful connections, especially with people who differ from us in significant ways. Few of us consider the impacts of these missed connections. Even fewer know how to recognize and overcome them.
This book will help you assess and improve the breadth and depth of your professional network so you can remove the artificial barriers that may be keeping you from your next mentor, star hire, or big customer.
Are you ready to transform your career, one relationship at a time?
Network Beyond Bias

Strongly recommended for early- and mid-career professionals!

Amy's book Network Beyond Bias is more than just about expanding your networking circle to include people  you would not normally be attracted to. It's a book about the importance of expanding your network in general and the dividends an expanded network brings.

I strongly recommend this book to professionals starting out their careers and those in the middle of their careers. Amy gives practical suggestions in expanding your working network and how nobody should be excluded, both above you and below you on the food chain.

In five years after reading this book and incorporating her insights, you will see how her wisdom will have paid you preferred dividends.

If you think you’ve heard it all, you haven’t!

While the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and society at large has been a popular topic over the past few years, many books and articles on the subject can be formulaic to the point of saturation, falsely leading you to think “you’ve heard it all”. Much of it is good information, but you may think you’re already doing everything you can - it’s other people who need to change their attitudes and then we can move forward.

Network Beyond Bias shatters these myths and provides a resounding call to action for even the most die-hard supporters of diversity and inclusion. If you think you’ve heard it all, you haven’t. Amy C. Waninger’s book is a quick read - I consumed it in one day - that is chock full of information you don’t already know. More importantly, it provides practical tips for concrete actions you can take to improve your interactions with people on a personal and professional level. By incorporating Amy’s clear, concise and specific tips, you will enrich your own life as well as others and greatly improve your workplace culture. A more positive workplace culture, in turn, allows everyone to move from being on edge trying to simply “fit in” to feeling comfortable being authentic. When everyone is being their authentic self, we can leverage each other’s strengths and collaborate together in a more powerful way to deliver improved results to the organization’s bottom line.

On a personal level, the most challenging passages for me were on the LGBT community and specifically learning about the trans community. As the proud father of a trans daughter, our family have spent time learning about how to be an ally for the LGBT community. However, I learned a lot that I did not know from Network Beyond Bias that will allow me to be not only a stronger ally for my daughter, but also for the LGBT employees that report to me as a manager and that I collaborate with on a daily basis - irrespective of whether I know their sexual orientation or not.

Thank you Amy for sharing your personal story in your book and making this so accessible, easy to read, educational with practical advice that can be incorporated in my life immediately. Changing behavior is never easy, but this book does an outstanding job of leading you to consider your biases, how to acknowledge them, and how to move beyond a point where they are limiting your career and your organization’s ability to deliver the best results it can achieve.

Pragmatic insight…a must-read

A pragmatic insight into unconscious bias and the power of networks. A must-read for any executive who genuinely wants to capitalise on the benefits of inclusivity.

'Network Beyond Bias' will have a huge impact on not just raising awareness of our unconscious biases but also providing positive interventions to reduce and mitigate those biases

Highly Recommend!

I would highly recommend Amy C. Waninger’s book, Network Beyond Bias: Making Diversity a Competitive Advantage in Your Career. The book does a super job of integrating the importance of diversity and inclusion with the “who’s and how’s” of networking. The premise is by having a diverse group of connections it expands possibilities and offers more innovative ideas.  Amy drives home the power of a diverse network and offers suggestions to overcome perceived barriers when getting to know individuals who may be different from oneself.

The book is an easy read and is filled with useful information including a tool to assess and measure the diversity of an individual’s network.   Real scenarios of diverse challenges provide the reader the opportunity to explore a variety of perspectives.  The content included in the chapter, Seek Diverse Perspectives on Purpose, covers important facts about some of the most challenging and timely dimensions of diversity and inclusion.

Because Amy shares some personal information and challenges she has experienced, after reading her book, I was left with the feeling of having a good sense of who she is and the value of what she brings to the field of diversity and inclusion.

Groundbreaking and Eye-opening

Who is missing from my professional network?’ It’s a question I had never considered until reading Amy C. Waninger’s groundbreaking and eye-opening book. But it’s a question that gets to the heart of who I am ― professional and personally ― and how my own biases might be standing in my way of helping others, growing my company, and even catapulting my own career beyond my current aspirations and (self-inflicted) limitations. Network Beyond Bias is a book whose time has come ― a book that will improve teams, open doors, broaden careers, and bring a healthy dose of strategy, humanity, and perspective to the way readers think about the work they do, the hands they shake, and the success they achieve. Bravo to Amy C. Waninger for writing a book that’s not just ‘beyond bias’ but also beyond our greatest expectations for how a book on diversity and inclusion can be as inspiring as it is practical.

Provided me a Renewed Energy for a Broader Reach

This book is a gem filled with insights and strategies for individuals and organizations.

Amy has provided a practical review of important workplace and career areas through a diversity lens.  Her first-hand experience and knowledge provide insights into recruiting, career planning and networking, unconscious bias, learning and development, organizational culture, and interpersonal skills to name a few.  I found her stories refreshing and relevant to issues that we are seeing all too frequently in the workplace. But most importantly, Amy offers actionable steps and tools to assist individuals in personal and career development.

...

Overall, I whole heartedly recommend this book for any professional who wants to better harness the value of diversity for the betterment of themselves and their organization.  This book was a pleasant surprise and enjoyable read.  It has given me renewed energy as a leader to broaden my reach.  Thank you, Amy!

Buy it, read it, and benefit from it

There are plenty of do-this books in the world, but Amy Waninger's book blew me away. She approaches the practical, emotional, and professional opportunities that await someone willing to learn from and include "others" into their networks and lives. Fresh writing, important topics, and clear examples -- I read it in a sitting and came away with three pages of notes that I'll take into the next phase of my career. Buy it, read it, and benefit from it.

Great book full of practical actionable steps

Great book full of practical actionable steps. This is a superb book that should be on far more required reading lists. As an engineer not directly involved in leadership I wasn't certain how relevant it would be, and was delighted, if a bit shocked, to find so many practical actionable steps that I could take. The CHAMP exercise in particular was a real eye-opener. Read this book - even, and especially, if you don't think you need to.

Unique Approach

I don’t think we can ever talk enough about uncovering unconscious bias, effective networking, and working toward greater inclusion. In this book, Amy uses personal examples and simple language to continue the dialogue and get us into action. If you do nothing else, be sure to complete the networking exercise in Chapter 33. This unique approach will uncover gaps in your network that you never knew existed.
