Program: Hire Beyond Bias

Program Description

Are you ready to expand your team or backfill an open position? Unconscious bias can influence our hiring processes in ways we don’t readily recognize. This makes it hard for us to attract a diverse slate of candidates and to recognize qualified candidates who may not conform to our expectations. This program will help you avoid common pitfalls at every stage of your selection process.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize barriers to attracting and selecting highly qualified candidates
  • Identify and remove restrictive language from job postings
  • Develop strategies to overcome biases during resume screening and interviews
  • Establish objective tie-breakers for final selection decisions

Target Audience

  • Hiring managers, regardless of experience
  • Newly formed management teams or hiring teams
  • Technical staff involved in candidate selection/evaluation processes

On-site Program Options

Half-day or full-day configurations available. Interactive activities will be customized to support your organization’s specific goals. This program requires additional lead time, including two 30-minute prep calls with program sponsors.

Virtual Program Options

  • 60-minute live webinars – Series of 4, with homework
  • 60-minute live webinars – Series of 8, with homework

You have been a champion for me and helping me get my contributions noticed and seen. You have helped me feel comfortable reaching for things I may have been afraid or unsure of doing. You have encouraged me to think about situations from different perspectives, and sometimes you ask me questions I don't want to answer, because then I'm accountable for what I do with what I learn about myself.

I participated in one of Amy's Unconscious Bias Webinars and learned a ton. She has a great way to bring down the concepts to make them easy to understand and fun so you're bound to remember them. I still think about round heads vs square heads all the time, it really stuck with me! Excellent webinar. I learned a ton and highly recommend it!

Hello Amy,

I wanted to thank you for the dynamic presentation to the MBA students at Olivet College.
I have written to the program director requesting a note of thanks and/or letter of recommendation on Olivet letterhead. I will certainly provide one personally on Linkedin. And, of course, I will provide the feedback link to the students.

On another note, I am part of the Risk and Insurance Council at ________________ Association. This council is a very diverse group of professionals; definitely part of the movers and shakers in the industry. I'm trying to think how I might introduce you to this group and possibly have you speak/present in a future meeting.

Thank you!

Amy lead a Curated Conversation breakout session at 2019 The WLI Regional Summit in Louisville, KY. The topic we asked her to facilitate was challenging, sensitive and controversial, but we believed it added boldness and depth to our event. Amy did not disappoint. She managed to balance emotions and the academic thought for a focused and productive discussion despite differing views in the room. I highly recommend Lead at Any Level for any event!

I had the absolute privilege in participating in a session led by Amy on the importance of diversity and inclusion within the insurance industry and the importance of building networks. I have attended many conferences tackling similar concepts but haven't ever walked away with as many practical action items. Amy has passion and insight that are clearly displayed throughout her session. I find her to be incredibly approachable and able to respond to the very specific challenges that my team and organization are facing. I would highly recommend Amy if you are looking for an expert who can help your organization embrace diversity and inclusion.

Amy C. Waninger's "Lead at any Level" presentation on bias was a refreshing and useful presentation that offered many tools I will now use to expand the diversity and impact of my network.

As a career advisor who works largely with a non-traditional student population, it can be a challenge to express the value and importance of actively networking within our technology age.

This presentation offered tools like the CHAMP/IGGNORE model and language that I will rely upon to express that value to my clients, and help them as they grow professionally and personally.

Hi Amy,
I just finished watching and listening to the recording of a CPCU Society webinar that I originally missed. I almost did not go back to it because I have been so busy, but I am so glad that I did!

You did an excellent job presenting this topic. I believe that many people are turned off by topics about diversity and inclusion. They somehow feel offended or uncomfortable by them. I have seen, heard and participated in many diversity presentations over the past 15 years and this was honestly one of the best. It was a very interesting way to try to approach the topic. Not only did you do a great job conveying the information, but you were also quite inspiring and an excellent speaker.

All the best to you, Amy, with your company and your career.

You taught me if I am going to do something I can't do it half way. Really push the limits. This has beneficial in so many ways in my personal and professional life.

My association with Amy Waninger has grown from a virtual "cold call" a year ago to a strong and multi-faceted partnership. Today, among her other responsibilities, Amy is a faculty member of NextGen Leaders, an organization I founded that provides leadership development support to LGBTQ professionals. Amy is among the very best of the new generation of expert-consultants in the Diversity & Inclusion and Leadership Development spaces.

Her expertise, her decades' long experience in a Fortune 500 company and her personal commitment to equality and inclusion are a potent combination. Together they create an excellent platform for Amy to exercise her considerable creative talents, whether in front of an audience, coaching an individual, consulting for a management team or writing her next book. That sounds like a lot, and I don't know many people who can effectively pull all of that together in a sustained way.

But Amy is one of the most productive people I have had the pleasure of working with. She believes deeply in what she does, has the wisdom and empathy necessary to meet people where they are and the humility to be approachable and make everyone feel at ease, even as she's helping them dispense with outdated thinking and misperceptions that, while sometimes deeply held, do neither them or anyone else any good.

...[Y]ou helped me maneuver the corporate landscape by pulling my military skills that I learned as a sergeant in the military and applying them in corporate America, which is a totally different beast. You’ve also taught me how to be a versatile leader and how to advocate for my voice in the workplace, which can be challenging as a woman professional... The materials that you sent me and your check on my learning really helped me out...

Amy is a really fantastic person. She has a great story and I love that she's focused her work on "the problem before the problem." While diversity and inclusion in the workplace is something we all need to work on, she has brought attention to the fact that building a diverse personal social network is the first step, and something that's on all of us. Amy is extremely smart, incredibly generous, and someone you want to follow up with.

Amy Waninger’s talk at the Business Insurance’s Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Conference was very informative, especially as a young professional. Her framework for networking was so valuable and I know I will use it throughout my career!

I would like to thank YOU for your motivation and encouragement at the TSAE New Ideas Conference. As a result of our conversation, I'm now putting all the movements in place to apply for and sit for the Certified Association Executive (CAE) exam next December! Positive interactions work!

Thank you Amy! I really enjoyed your lecture. I already put some things I learned from you into practice such as making a “worry” notebook and designating time for the “worry” tasks. So far I think it is helping me manage my worry!

I shared your name yesterday afternoon with two folks that were impacted [by a recent layoff]. I told them that if they want to discover more about the power of networks, subscribe to your site, etc., to email you. I told them it would change their life....and I mean it!

I wanted to reach out and let you know how much I enjoyed meeting you and attending your session at ASAE. Afterward I ran to the conference bookstore and grabbed the last copy of your book! I was sharing with my team that I had attended your session, and they were interested to learn more. When I return to the office, I am expecting to have a robust conversation with some of them. I hope that ASAE invites you again (and said so in my review).  I know that what you are doing is a great service not only to the business world but also to society, especially in the current climate.

Presenter was engaging. You gave me several ideas to use in my life. Keep the slides as-is. You answer questions with humor and truth.

Amy presented just the right mix of instruction and interactivity to be sure that audience members understood the importance of a diverse workforce and had identified weaknesses our own networks. The assessment tool she introduced in the "Our Brains Are Biased: How to Break Out, Break In, and Break Through" webinar showed me the weaknesses in my own professional network (without making me feel exposed) and highlighted areas for improvement. She created an atmosphere of safety during the session which allowed us to ask potentially-sensitive questions knowing that her response would be professional and kind. This is an especially important session for new professionals to help them build their networks with intention and for those with well-established networks who may not yet realize the bias that they may be unconsciously supporting.

Amy is articulate, organized, conversational, relatable, funny, and good a pausing and asking for questions throughout the call. Content was delivered as expected, in an organized/logical manner with relatable examples along the way. Amy is always a pleasure to speak to and work with!
